Fire is the oldest altar. Long before stone temples were built, long before bronze deities were cast, the sacred fire was kindled and the first offering was made. The Homam — the Vedic fire ritual — carries this primal act of worship unbroken through four millennia into the present day.
What Is a Homam?
A Homam (also Havan or Homa) is a Vedic ritual in which offerings — ghee, grains, herbs, wood — are made into a consecrated fire while Vedic mantras are recited. The fire is considered a direct conduit to the divine: what is offered into the fire reaches the deity for whom it is intended. A Yagam (or Yajna) is a larger, more elaborate version of a Homam, often involving multiple priests, multiple fire pits, and days-long recitation.
