Africa my home
My grandmother's hands traced the intricate kolam patterns on her kitchen floor, traditions carried across continents from Tamil Nadu to our Johannesburg home. She whispered stories in Tamil while I watched, absorbing rhythms of our ancestors through her voice. When neighbors gathered for our harvest festival, something shifted. Their genuine curiosity about our rituals, their willingness to learn our dances, made me understand belonging differently. Africa wasn't replacing our heritage; it was expanding it. My daughter now teaches her friends Tamil phrases, proud of roots blooming in African soil. Our community celebrated her achievement with warmth that crossed every boundary. In sharing who we are, we discovered we're never truly apart from home.
