Cincinnati is in shock and disbelief after a tragic drive-by shooting that sprayed over 20 bullets into a group of children, resulting in the tragic death of an 11-year-old boy and injuries to four other children and an adult. The incident occurred near an intersection on a Friday night when someone in a dark sedan fired 22 rounds in rapid succession, as reported by Police Chief Terri Theetge on Sunday. Among the victims were boys aged 11, 12, 13, and 15, a 15-year-old girl, and a 53-year-old woman. One victim is still in stable condition in the hospital.
Two of the children were students at Cincinnati Preparatory Academy, including the boy who lost his life, while the other three attended Cincinnati public schools. Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval expressed his deep sadness, describing the shooting as "sickening and unimaginable." He explained that the children were simply playing outside when the shots rang out in the city's West End, which is in close proximity to a daycare, a girls' dance studio, and a playground.
Mayor Pureval emphasized the devastating nature of the incident, with 22 rounds fired in a matter of moments into a group of innocent children, leaving no time for them to react or respond. Authorities have not yet disclosed information about a suspect, and it remains uncertain whether the shooting was a targeted attack.
This tragic event is part of a disturbing trend of gun violence sweeping across the United States. According to the Gun Violence Archive, as of late Sunday, there have been 596 mass shootings in the U.S. in the current year, with over 1,200 teenagers (ages 12-17) killed and 3,400 injured in 2023, along with over 250 children (ages 11 and younger) killed and nearly 570 injured.
