Egusi (melon)
My grandmother's weathered hands crushed egusi seeds between stone and mortar, just as her mother did in Srivilliputhur generations ago. When I posted this simple photograph, something unexpected happened. The reaction surprised me—some felt resentful, others praiseworthy. But what mattered most was reconnecting with cousins who'd forgotten our heritage. This small income from sharing our story helped me document family recipes, preserving what nearly disappeared. Through those menacing years of modernization, our traditions cruised forward, staying alive. Now younger generations see their roots, understanding where they come from. Heritage becomes real when shared.
