Black Teen Makes History

Meet Caleb Smith, a 16-year-old from P.G. County, Maryland, who, according to the FAA, has become the country's youngest glider pilot.  He is currently a 10th grader at Springdale's Charles H. Flowers High School. Caleb's dream began on a discovery trip at Bowie Freeway Airport when he was just ten years old.  His ambition inspired a genuine interest in aviation as a result of this event.  He'd fly with a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) every now and again to see if the desire was still there.  Over time, he gradually began to chase his passion by receiving one-on-one ground training and airtime. Caleb received a gliding school scholarship in May 2021.  After 33 flights, he was able to fly solo for the first time, and he has since flown 12 solos.  Furthermore, he has passed the FAA written exam as well as his check-ride, allowing him to get his Glider Pilot's license.  His ultimate ambition is to work as a commercial airline pilot. His mission, he adds, is to inspire other young people by showing them that they can achieve their goals if they stay connected to God, stay family-oriented, get a good education, maintain values, and, most importantly, cultivate love and respect for others.
