flowers
My grandmother pressed flowers between yellowed pages of ancient Tamil Brahmi texts, preserving both blooms and language for me. When I moved abroad, those delicate petals traveled in my suitcase, reminders of home and roots deepening elsewhere. At PaybookClub last month, I shared her story with other diaspora members. Someone brought their mother's recipes written in Tamil script. Another displayed childhood photographs. We realized our scattered community blooms strongest when we tend to these fragments—the grit required to maintain identity across continents, the terrific resilience found in remembering together. Those flowers still sit in my drawer, waste to some, but everything to us.
