The White Beach
My grandmother hummed a Thyagaraja composition as we walked Chennai's white sand shore, her silver anklets chiming like temple bells. She'd performed Carnatic music here decades ago, before fame beckoned elsewhere. Today, we scattered her ashes into the Arabian Sea, reclaiming what the city had stolen. A stranger stopped, recognizing the melody my mother continued singing. Then another joined. Soon, a circle formed—strangers becoming witnesses, becoming family. The beach transformed into a concert hall, applause replaced by waves' gentle rhythm. Some moments don't need validation online. They needed this: community breathing together, honoring voices that shaped us.
