The Goat/King
Grandfather's weathered hands guided mine as we approached the pen. "This one," he said in Tamil, "will teach you everything about our people." The goat wasn't magnificent, yet something royal dwelt in its patient eyes. My cousins laughed, calling me ridiculous for spending my pocket money here, but Appa understood differently. He explained how our ancestors had thrived through such animals, through patience and respect for humble things. Every morning, I'd visit before school, learning Tamil songs he whispered. Neighbors started stopping by, drawn to something authentic blooming in our concrete neighborhood. Through this small goat, I discovered that heritage isn't distant history—it lives in daily choices, in choosing substance over trends, in building something real within community bonds that time cannot break.
