Rekha, born Bhanurekha Ganesan on October 10, 1954, in Madras (now Chennai), is an acclaimed Indian actress who has significantly contributed to Indian cinema, particularly through her portrayal of strong female characters in over 200 films. Her performance as a classical courtesan in the 1981 film "Umrao Jaan" earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress in 1982. In recognition of her contributions to the arts, she was honored with the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award, in 2010.
