Sharmistha Panda — Odissi

Artistic Background

Odissi is a classical dance form from Odisha, India—renowned for its sculpture-like poses, sinuous torso movements, and expressive storytelling (abhinaya). Rooted in ancient temple traditions (maharis) and the later gotipua style, it echoes the carvings of the Konark Sun Temple. Dancers move between the square chowka stance and the iconic tribhangi (three-body-bend), blending grace (lasya) with vigor (tandava). Repertoire typically flows through Mangalacharan, Batu, Pallavi, Abhinaya (often from Gīta Govinda), and Moksha. The music is Odissi classical with the mardala drum, intricate footwork, and codified hand gestures (mudras). Costumes feature vibrant silk (often Sambalpuri/ikat), silver filigree jewelry, and a white lotus-like headpiece. Modern revival was led by gurus like Kelucharan Mohapatra, Pankaj Charan Das, Deba Prasad Das, and Mayadhar Raut—shaping the stage form seen worldwide today.
