Jayaprabha Menon — Mohiniyattam

Artistic Background

Mohiniyattam (also spelled Mohiniattam) is a classical dance form from Kerala, India. Its name combines Mohini—the enchanting female avatar of Vishnu—and attam, meaning dance. Known for soft, flowing “lāsya” (feminine grace), it features gentle swaying of the torso, rounded steps, subtle facial expression, and expressive hand gestures. Dancers wear the iconic off-white kasavu costume with gold borders and jasmine-adorned bun, performing to Carnatic/Kerala Sopana music with instruments like edakka, mridangam, veena, and flute. The repertoire often includes Cholkettu, Jatiswaram, Varnam, Padam, and Tillana, exploring themes of devotion and love (often to Krishna). Historically patronized by the Travancore court and revived in the 20th century by Kerala Kalamandalam, Mohiniyattam is today a refined solo form celebrated for its elegance and depth.
